Iran World Cup Football Team

The Iran national football team is the national team of Iran and is controlled by the Islamic Republic of Iran Football Federation and is one of the strongest teams in Asia. Iran is also known as Team Melli.

Iran won the Asian Cup three times in a row (1968, 1972, 1976) and have finished third four times. In 1978, Iran made its first appearance in the World Cup and lost two of their three group stage games against the Netherlands and Peru. However, they managed to create a shock by drawing against the famous Scotland side 1-1 with a late Iraj Danaeifard goal.

Iran has qualified for the World Cup five times (1978, 1998, 2006, 2014, and 2018) but has never advanced past the group stage. Iran's only win in the World Cup has been a 2-1 victory against the United States in 1998.

Iran will be playing in Group B with Portugal, Spain and Morocco.
